It’s called the “Transit of Venus,” an extremely rare astronomical event in which Venus passes between the earth and the sun at just the exact right angle so that the planet is silhouetted against the solar disk — like someone punched a hole in the sun. As the day goes on, the tiny black dot that’s our solar system’s second planet will traverse the sun in an arch.

And then it won’t happen again until 2117.

America’s Largest Car Museum Opens Tomorrow

If you’re from the Seattle/Tacoma area, then you’re more fortunate than the rest of us, because opening tomorrow, June 2, is LeMay Museum,
“America’s Car Museum,” located right next to the Tacoma Dome.

The building is shown in the first image above. It’s basically a beautifully crafted, four-story warehouse, holding some of the best classic and vintage cars the U.S. has ever seen. The museum was created by family and friends of Harold LeMay, the man with the largest car collection in the world. Every car inside the place was his and after he died, they wanted to honor him and celebrate America’s love affair with the automobile by sharing his collection with others and thank the car gods they did because the collection is extensive.

Take a walk through the building and you’ll find well known classics like several Model T’s, some great late-50s MOPARs, and of course some late-60s/early-70s muscle cars.

But look a bit deeper and you’ll find some seriously rare cars from America’s past including a single cylinder 1906 Cadillac Model M, a 1926 Oldsmobile Holden 30D, a beautiful 1928 Chrysler Series 72, a 1930 Duesenberg Model J, and a 1948 Tucker! In addition, there are cars from the many companies that weren’t around for too long in the beginning of the 20th century and some European cars like a Delorean, a 1965 Lotus 35, a Citroen 2CV, and a Bristol Bus.

Starting tomorrow, it will be the largest car museum in the U.S. They will be having a grand opening all this weekend and for $14, you get a slice of motoring heaven.

New York City seeks to ban big sodas from restaurants, food carts

“More than half of NYC adults (58%) are overweight or obese,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg tweeted Thursday. “We’re doing something about it.”

The ban would outlaw such drinks larger than 16 ounces at restaurants, food carts and any other establishments that receive letter grades for food service. It would not apply to grocery stores.

Critics — including McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, which stand to be hurt by the proposal — quickly assailed it as “misguided” and “arbitrary.”

The New York City Department of Health will submit the measure to the Board of Health on June 12. There will then be a three-month comment period before the board votes on the proposal, officials said.

“If approved, the city’s proposal would take effect six months after Board of Health approval and would be enforced by the city’s regular restaurant inspection team,” a statement from Bloomberg’s office said. “Restaurant owners will have nine months from the adoption of the proposal until they face fines.”

If you’re hitting the road this holiday weekend, remember that millions of other travelers will be joining you.

The American Automobile Association estimates there will be 34.8 million Americans traveling at least 50 miles over the Memorial Day weekend, which begins Thursday for some lucky travelers. It’s a 1.4 percent increase in total travelers compared to last year’s Memorial Day.

2013 Cadillac XTS Comes With Free iPad

When the Cadillac XTS goes on sale in late spring, buyers will be treated to a free iPad. It will come loaded with an application for CUE, the carmaker’s multimedia system, with the goal of getting owners acquainted with the system.

The Cadillac XTS is one of the first Caddys to come equipped with CUE, or Cadillac User Experience. The CUE app on the iPad will allow owners to “test-drive” the touch-sensitive system, according to Cadillac. The app mimics many of the controls and features that owners will see in the center display console on their XTS, says the luxury carmaker.

The iPad also comes preloaded with other apps such as OnStar RemoteLink and MyCadillac App, which lets you locate a dealer, schedule services and call roadside assistance.

“U.S. traffic fatalities have dropped seven years in a row, with the 43,510 people dying in traffic accidents in 2005. NHTSA attributes a number of factors to the continued decrease in fatalities including increased seat belt use and more safety devices inside vehicles.

“By region, NHTSA noted that accidents in New England dropped the most, 7.2 percent, while accidents in California and Hawaii increased the most, 3.3 percent, compared to the year before.”

According the AAA, for kids traveling internationally without both parents, “A letter of permission from the absent parent signed before a notary is needed. … Single parents, grandparents, step-parents, guardians and any adult with a last name different from the child needs to be prepared with the additional documentation to present at border crossings, airport immigrations checkpoints and cruise-line check-in desks.”

Another important point AAA makes, which I had never before considered, was the importance of child medical care authorization. My kids take a long road trip each summer with their grandparents. From here on out, I’ll be sending them along with a medical proxy, “an original notarized letter from the non-traveling parent(s) granting permission to authorize emergency medial care for the child.”
